When it comes to hidden gems, it doesn’t get more elusive and amazing as Greenhouse restaurant and guesthouse! Tucked away on the banks of the Kampot river just a short drive away from the pepper plantations and the seafood markets, Greenhouse is an excellent guesthouse with incredible food, a well-priced wine list and plenty of charm and natural vibes which will leave you craving that next trip back to Cambodia.
The property’s main building which houses the restaurant, bar and the reception is a beautiful traditional Khmer house that used to be a popular low-key bar in Phnom Penh. Exploring the library of classic French books can be exciting in the evenings!
I loved the quaint rooms! They were basic with breathtaking river views
Staying in one of their private bungalows with sprawling river views, one can almost forget that you’re in the tropics! While the bed was acceptable with a fan and a mosquito net in the bungalow, I would have much preferred an air-conditioned room; that said being along the river and well-protected by the mosquito net the comfort level was surprisingly sufficient for me. There was ample hot water and the wi-fi signal, while weak, was adequate to make a few urgent calls to our editor-at-large about his adventures in Mexico!
Excellent cuisine focused on Kampot Peppers!
The highlight is most definitely the food! Greenhouse restaurant offers inventive and traditional cuisines, with a special focus on Kampot Peppers. Every meal was prepared with great care and it was very evident that the chefs had extensive training at modern restaurants.
Well presented cuisine and stellar wines were served at every meal, the prices were reasonable and the ambiance overlooking the river was unbeatable.
Use the Greenhouse as your base during your travels around Kampot, you won’t regret it!
Spend a relaxed weekend at the Greenhouse. Lay along the Kampot river and sit down to a nice book while listening to the crickets chirp. Watch the smooth motion of the passing clouds, indicative of smoother journies ahead. Fall asleep on one of their hammocks while sipping a lightly chilled Bordeaux. There are no rules how to enjoy your life, but you can be sure you will enjoy your time at The GreenHouse.
I will definitely be back and I can’t wait! (Although, I do wish they had airconditioning)
